New Brunswick

New Brunswick is Canada's only officially bilingual province, with over two hundred years of history. Many aspects of its culture reflect Mic Mac, Maliseet, French (Acadian), and British loyalist heritage. Rural areas are still farmed from original homesteads. Old barns dot the tree-lined meadows. Over 66 covered bridges are nestled into the green landscape. The people are friendly and courteous; New Brunswick hospitality is well known. New Brunswick boasts over 2,000 km of sprawling coastline, ranging from sandy or pebble beach to craggy cliffs that plunge to the sea. The Bay of Fundy has the highest tides anywhere in the world, a dramatic feat of nature. The Fundy waters are home to over fifteen species of whale, including the rare right whale.

In May, fiddleheads (young ostrich ferns) are harvested...a local delicacy often served up with shad or Atlantic salmon. Clams, mussels, oysters, scallops, halibut and lobster abound. Try some Acadian fare... rappie pie or friqot aux coques!

Explore two distinct regions of Canada's "picture province": the River Valley and the Bay of Fundy Coastal Region.

The River Valley area is crisscrossed with quiet country roads linked by barge ferries.

The Bay of Fundy Coastal Region features breathtaking views of the world's highest tides. Opportunity abounds to sight marine mammals and sea birds.

This year, a day hike into the Big Salmon River gorge, featuring rare flora, and an interpretive boat cruise on the Hampton Marsh are offered.

Accomodations and Meals

We start our tour of New Brunswick with two nights at the Amsterdam Inn in Sussex and dine at the Broadway Café, famous for cheesecake and listed in Where to Eat in Canada for the past ten years.

From here we move on to the city of Saint John where we will put up at the Parker House Inn in the historic downtown district. On the first night we dine at the inn and the second you are free to explore the city and try one of the many fine restaurants on your own.

On we go to Campobello Island where we check in to the Lupine Lodge, a refurbished log cottage overlooking Deer Island. We arrive in the Village of St. George to stay at Hibbard House, an old sea captain's quarters on the river for our final night.
